kabia e'ana ea'ahâ:uâmâhâ ukuo hÊmô'ô kanîÎ epÎkâ hÊmô'ô edixoo ba'ubuoda'a ukaka baka:IhIa.

At that time the tree called epîka, which the people were used to using, bore fruit.

(Da) sprach er zu seiner Frau: "Brate eine Wildtaube als Nahrung für uns hier!"
(There) he spoke to his wife: "Roast a wild pigeon as food for us here!"
(Disana) ia berbicara kepada istrinya: "Pangganglah seekor merpati liar sebagai makanan kita di sini!"

" 'ôô !", e'uaha:o honânîâ badi eiTi dadudia. 
"Ja!", erwiderte seine Frau als Antwort auf die Frage ihres Mannes.
"Yes!", responded his wife in answer to her husband's question.
"Ya!", sahut istrinya menjawab pertanyaan suaminya.

kE'anaha kapabIhaha e'ûmâô e'ana. 
Alsdann briet sie die Wildtaube.
Then she roasted the wild pigeon.
Lalu dia memanggang merpati liar itu.

Note: "nun" literally means "now", but as an exclamation is equivalent to something like "right" in English. 

hoo bIha !"

Note: "done" is here used to translate "gar", which refers to meat being well cooked.

kE e'anaha kabu'uaha nô'ô:i'îÊ ehuda e'ana 'odadudia : 
Darauf sprach die Frau folgendermassen zu ihrem Manne: 
Thereafter the woman spoke to her husband as follows: 
Kemudian wanita itu berbicara kepada suaminya seperti ini:

"kanôôpûâ !
"Lass uns nur essen! 
"Let us (just) eat! 
"Ayo makan (saja)!
Note: "nur" is literally "just", but the sentence is probably best translated "let us eat". "nur" might indicate a certain urgency or exasperation on the part of the speaker, but if so, the connotation is very subtle.

hE pa'ipa'a earaka, kamûnôôhâ !"
Los, wecke unser Kind, lass uns essen!"
Go, wake our child, let us eat!"
Ayo, bangunkan anak kita, mari kita makan!

3. kE'anaha kapadIpa'aha earadia, kEoba'a ipIhai mâ:inônô. 
3. Deshalb weckte er sein Kind, (aber) es vermochte nichts zu spüren.
3. Thus he woke his child, (but) it was not able to feel anything.

Note: The German translation is misleading here. "wecken" means "to wake (someone)", but the child does not actually wake up. I have translated the German literally, but it is likely that the German doesn't quite capture the true meaning of the Enggano sentence here and we should instead say something like "tried to wake". The same problem occurs at several points below.

"hE yada'a pa'ipa'a kia, kamûnôôpÊ yaudu ! 
"Wecke es nicht, (sondern) lass uns vorweg essen! 
Do not wake it, (but) let us eat before (instead)! 
Jangan membangunkannya, (tetapi) mari kita makan saja duluan (tanpa menunggu)!

anâ'âÊpÊ abahadoha kia ahii kia mûnôôhâ !"
Nachher, wenn es erwacht, wird es wieder essen!"
Later, when it awakens, it will eat again!"
Nanti, kalau dia bangun, dia akan makan lagi! "

kapuakaha, kE e'anaha epaha'ipa'adia 'oupaE mô'ô ku'uoho.

5. kE'anaha kimûnâ'âhâ ekixo, dibupikoa'aha i'iôônîâ. 
5. Und dann holten sie Ameisen, die (es) bissen.

kEaba'a ya:inônô.

"No", thus were his wife's words, "we shall proceed with him as follows: fell a tree!

ukoa'a:oda, nâ'ânî kabapu'uaha ekuo e'ana hÊmô'ô 'o'o kikoa'a.
Schlage ihn an, und nachher wird der Baum fallen, den du angeschlagen hast.
Notch its side, and later the tree will fall, which you have notched.
Lekukkan (salah satu) sisinya, dan kemudian pohon itu akan jatuh, ke arah bagian yang telah kamu lekukkan.

i'IdIhIa'a kia i'uohoadia".
Er wird es (dann) an seinem Schlafplatz erschrecken".
It will then startle the child in its place of rest."

Thus were the words of the child, because it was scared, because it was alone.

7. kabiaha ubIdada'a eko'E'E kapadia'a kia nâÊnâ. 
7. Da war unvermutet ein Teufel anwesend, der zu seiner Mutter wurde.
7. Then the devil, which turned into its (the child's) mother, was present unexpectedly.
7. Kemudian si iblis, yang berubah rupa menjadi ibunya (si anak), muncul tiba-tiba.

kabEiTixa : "abia 'ua!", 
Er rief: "Ich bin da!", 
He called: "I am there!", (here?)
Dia berteriak: "Aku disini!", 

e'uaha:o uko'E'E ki'âmî eiTi upaE e'ana.

8. kabupIaha eko'E'E ehûâ ukanîxôô ka'ikoko, kabu'uaha nô'ô:i'îÊ eko'E'E 'oupaE e'ana : "amânâ'â emÊhÊmû ehûâ ukanîxôô ea'a!" 
8. (Als) der Teufel Früchte des ekanîxôô-Baumes erblickte, die rot waren, da sprach der Teufel folgendermassen zu dem Kinde: "Hole Früchte jenes ekanîxôô-Baumes als Wegzehrung für dich!"
8. (When) the devil saw the fruits of the ekanîxôô-tree, which were red, then he spoke to the child as follows: "Fetch fruit of that ekanîxôô-tree as provision for the journey for yourself!"
8. (Ketika) si iblis melihat buah-buahan dari pohon ekanîxôô, yang berwarna merah, kemudian ia berbicara kepada anak itu sebagai berikut: "Ambil buah pohon ekanîxôô itu sebagai bekal perjalanan untuk dirimu sendiri!"

kanô'ôâhâhâ edi'ua uko'E'E.

Thus were the words of the devil.

"hE nô'ôâhâ!", 
"Wohlan, so sei es!", 
"Alright, so be it!", 
"Baiklah, lakukan saja!",

9. kE'anaha kapuakaha eko'E'E, yamâ:iNâ'â:uâhâ ixÊ'â ukanîxôô. 
9. Alsdann machte sich der Teufel auf den Weg, und er kletterte in den Wipfel des ekanîxôô-Baumes.
9. Then the devil started on his way and he climbed into the treetop of the ekanîxôô-tree.
9. Kemudian iblis mulai memanjat dan dia naik ke puncak pohon ekanîxôô.

kamôhô epaE e'ana kabu'ua nô'ô:i'îÊ i'ioo uko'E'E : "hE yada'a budodo kIda, bE 'oo ipakI'a e'apo ukuo, pu'udaha 'a'o! 
Da sprach das Kind folgendermassen zum Teufel: "Fass nicht die lebenden (Äste) an, (denn sonst) bricht der Baumast ab, und du fällst! 
Then the child spoke to the devil as follows: "Do not grasp the living (branches), (because else) the treebranch breaks off, and you fall!
Kemudian anak itu berkata kepada si iblis sebagai berikut: "Jangan memegang (cabang) yang hidup, (karena jika) cabang itu patah, dan engkau pasti jatuh!

yapakI'a epuEbu. 
(Dann) bricht dein Penis ab. 
(Then) your penis breaks off. 
(Lalu) penismu putus.

'obudodo hÊmô'ô ka'ao!"
Fasse abgestorbene (Äste) an!"
Grasp dead (branches)!"
Pegang (cabang) yang mati! "
 
kanô'ôâhâ edi'ua upaE e'ana, bE kia kIadi kiEamâkâ'â:uâ'â kiE'obuho kia ipIhai eakômôîNâ eko'E'E i'iôônîâ. 
So waren die Worte des Kindes, (denn) es suchte (einen Gedanken =) eine List, die es ausführen wollte, damit ihm das dem-Teufel-Entrinnen möglich sei.
Thus were the words of the child, (for) it sought (a thought =) a plan, which it wanted to execute, in order that the escape from the devil should be possible.
Demikianlah kata-kata anak itu, (karena) ia mencari (sebuah ide =) sebuah rencana, yang ingin ia lakukan, agar dimungkinkan lolos dari si iblis.

akEoba'a ipIhai bukômôîNâ'â kia.
Denn (so) vermochte es ihm nicht zu entkommen.
For (thus/just like that) it was not capable of escaping.
Karena (dengan demikian / begitu saja) ia tidak mampu melarikan diri.

10. kE'anaha kaminâ'â:uâha eko'E'E yaha:E ixÊ'â ukuo, kanîÎ ekanîxôô.

10. Thereafter the devil climbed into the treetop of the tree, which is called ekanîxôô.

kapu'udaha eko'E'E e'ana, bE kia ka'Ekoi eiTi upaE i'iôônîâ.

The devil fell, because it followed the child's words to him.

He grasped a dead treebranch; it broke off, (so that) he fell down and his penis broke off at his place of falling.

kamôhôhâ epaE e'ana kabupua, yaha:E yabakiu ixoo ukâî ukÊpûû.

And the child fled, it went away and sought shelter on the inside of the foot of the fern.

kE'anaha kahii mû'Ênûhâ eko'E'E ipu'udahadia nÊ'Ênî, kabu'uaha nô'ô:i'îÊ eko'E'E eiTi: "pakôhôî epuE'E:u!

Sie brachen auf, sie machten sich wieder auf den Weg, und sie kamen nach Hause.
They set off, they started on their way again, and they came home.

kanô'ôâhâmâ'â edi'obuda ki.
So wurde von ihnen getan.

The devil set off again, and again he took fruit from the ekanîxôô-tree.

Da sprach das Kind wieder: "Fass keine lebenden (Äste) an, denn (sonst) fällst du, und dein Penis bricht ab! 
There the child spoke again: "Don't grasp any live (branches), for (else) you fall, and your penis breaks off!

12. kahii mînâ'â:uâ eko'E'E e'ana ixÊ'â ukanîxôô. 
12. Der Teufel kletterte wieder in den Wipfel des ekanîxôô-Baumes.
12. The devil again climbed into the treetop of the ekanîxôô-tree.

kahii pu'udada'a. 
Und wiederum fiel er.
And again he fell.

bE edi'obu upanÊnÊâhâ:i upaE e'ana mâhâ:ikû ikômôîNâ'â kia mûnîxâ. 
Denn es war durch die Täuschung des Kindes verursacht, (welches) annahm, dass es ihm schnell entkommen (könne).
For it was caused by the child's trick, (which) assumed, that it (could) quickly escape him.
Karena hal itu disebabkan oleh muslihat si anak, (yang) diperkirakan, bahwa ia (bisa) dengan cepat melarikan diri darinya.

kabupuaha epaE e'ana, ixii baha:E, kaha:Ea iuba. 
Das Kind ergriff die Flucht, es machte sich wieder auf den Weg und wollte nach Hause gehen.
The child took flight, it started on its way again and wanted to go home.

14. Alsdann brach das Kind wieder auf.
14. Then the child set off again.

yai yakI'aha eubada, yaba'uohoha iôkôâ. 
(Als) es ankam, betrat es ihr Haus, (und) es schlief auf dem Gerüst über dem Herd.
(When) it arrived, it entered their house, (and) it slept on the framework above the hearth.
(Ketika) ia sampai, ia masuk rumahnya, (dan) ia tidur pada kerangka di atas perapian.

kE'anaha kahii ba'ioixa kia eko'E'E nÊ'Ênî hÊmô'ô ki'o'obuda'a i'iôônîâ i'Ekoa.
Da verfolgte es wieder der Teufel von vorhin, der sich unterwegs an ihm zu schaffen gemacht hatte.
There the devil from before chased it again, who had troubled it on the way.
Disana iblis yang tadi itu mengejarnya lagi, yang sebelumnya telah mengganggunya dalam perjalanan.
Note: The German here is very difficult to translate, because it is not quite clear what it means in this context. "sich an jemandem zu schaffen machen" roughly means "to do something to someone". But it is not clear what the devil is meant to have done to the child at this point. "troubled" is a similarly vague expression.

kE'anaha kakôkônâhâ ekoyo kinôôâ eko'E'E hÊmô'ô kayo'oi epaE e'ana. 
Da kamen die Schweine heraus, die den Teufel fressen wollten, der das Kind verfolgte.
At that the pigs came out, who wanted to eat the devil, who was chasing the child.
Saat itu babi-babi pun keluar, ingin memakan si iblis, yang mengejar anak itu.

e'uaha:o uko'E'E : "koroa i'ioo'o:u nâ'âpûânû!" 
Die Worte des Teufels waren (da): "Schont mich, euren Vorfahren!"
The devil's words (at that) were: "Spare me, your ancestor!"

kanô'ôâhâ edi'uadia bukoroi ekoyo. 
So sprach er, um die Schweine zu besänftigen.
Thus he spoke to appease the pigs.

kakoroa ekoyo, kakEaba'a ixau kia.
Die Schweine verschonten ihn, und er wurde nicht gebissen.
The pigs spared him and he wasn't bitten.

Deshalb fragte er einen Wildtaube geheissenen Vogel.
Thus he asked a bird called wild pigeon.
Maka ia bertanya pada seekor burung yang disebut merpati liar.

e'uaha:odia upanûnûhûî : "i'iaha e'uohoa 'a'abu?" 
Er fragte mit den Worten: "Wo ist die Schlafstätte deines älteren Bruders?"
He asked with the words: "Where is your older brother's resting place?"

Da wurde der Teufel zornig auf die Wildtaube, weil sie es ihm nicht erzählte.
At that the devil got angry at the wild pigeon, because it didn't tell him (it).
Pada saat itu si iblis marah kepada merpati liar, karena ia tidak memberitahukannya.

kamûkûmûhâ eû'û u'ûmâô e'ana, kapaku'ua yaha:E itopo.
Er umkrallte den Hals der Wildtaube und warf (sie) nach unten.
He grasped the neck of the wild pigeon and threw (it) downwards.
Ia mencengkeram leher merpati liar dan melemparkan (nya) ke bawah.

16. kahii mûnûnûhûînâ'â 'oukE'Epa kanîÎ ekiu'i : "i'iaha e'uohoa 'a'abu?", 
16. Dann fragte er wiederum einen "Edelsittich" genannten Vogel. "Wo ist die Schlafstätte deines älteren Bruders?" 
16. Then he asked a bird called "fine parakeet". Where is your older brother's resting place?"

He also grasped this bird's throat and threw it down.

Note: Enggano seems to use a definite article rather than a demonstrative with "bird".

17. kE'anaha epanûnûhûînîâ i'ioo kaha:i'i ekE'Epa kanîÎ ehiau. 
17. Darauf fragte er einen "Star" genannten Vogel.
17. Thereafter he asked a bird called "starling".
17. Setelah itu ia bertanya kepada seekor burung bernama "jalak".

e'uaha:odia upanûnûhûî 'oukE'Epa e'ana. 
Er fragte ihn danach mit (denselben) Worten.

And he named the location of (their=) his older brother, who slept on the framework above the hearth.
Dan ia memberitahu lokasi kakaknya (mereka=), yang tidur di kerangka di atas perapian.

kE'anaha kakEpI'aha eko'E'E e'ana, kabupuduha epaE e'ana ya'ao ; kamûnôôhâ kibaka e'ana. 
Da trat der Teufel ein, und er tötete das Kind, (so dass) es starb; er frass es roh auf.
At that the devil entered, and he killed the child, (so that) it died; he ate it raw.
Saat itupun si iblis masuk, dan ia membunuh anak itu, (sehingga) si anak meninggal; ia memakannya mentah-mentah.

kamûnâ'âhâ ekitaidia yaba:Ida iNâhâ umÊnô ; kabIda ekiakidia ibaka uakaruba. 
Er nahm die Eingeweide und legte sie auf den Platz des Palmweines, und er tat Blut vor die Tür.
He took the innards and laid them onto the place of the palmwine, and he put blood in front of the door.
Ia mengambil jeroan dan meletakkannya di bumbung tuak, dan ia menaruh darah di depan pintu.

kE'anaha kamûnâ'âhâ ekiaki upaE e'ana, kamûhÊîNâ'âhâ iudu ukE'Epa kanîÎ ehiau.

18. kE'anaha kabahadoha amânâ hii nâÊnâ, dibupIaha ekiaki hoo kIhIya iakaruba. 
18. (Als) dann sein Vater und seine Mutter aufstanden, sahen sie, dass Blut bei der Haustür niedergetropft war.
18. (When) then its father and its mother rose, they saw, that blood had dripped down by the front door.
18. (Ketika) kemudian ayah dan ibunya terbangun, mereka melihat, bahwa darah menetes di pintu depan.

e'uaha:oda : "aixoo mûnôô eko'E'E earaka!" 
"Anscheinend wurde unser Kind vom Teufel gefressen!" 
"Seemingly our child was devoured by the devil!"

kanô'ôâhâ edi'ua ukaka 'apaha:uda e'ana.
So waren die Worte jener Eheleute.
Thus were the words of those married people.
Begitulah kata-kata pasangan itu.
Note: "Eheleute" is the German word for a married couple. An alternative translation would be "spouses".

kinô'ôâhâ eiya ukIda'ayo ukaka halEE. 
Derart ist das Wesen der Erzählung der Leute von früher.
Thus is the nature of the tale of the people from earlier.
